This year, EFNMS, the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies, celebrates its 50th anniversary. For this joyous occasion, EFNMS launches a unique European photo contest challenging professional and hobby photographers to take inspiring pictures illustrating the impact, added value and importance of maintenance. BEMAS is an active member of EFNMS representing the maintenance community in Belgium.

BEMAS is the driving force behind this initiative and finds it very important to support it and to put maintenance in the spotlight, especially now that the corona crisis has shown its impact on society.
Wim Vancauwenberghe, director of BEMAS: “Because of the crisis, many companies have to take cost-cutting measures. Maintenance services are very sensitive to this. At the same time, many technical services have to work harder to guarantee the availability of technical parts, because the business activity is essential to continue to provide society with services for the health and well-being of everyone. With this photo contest EFNMS and BEMAS want to emphasize and clarify the value of maintenance.”

EFNMS, contributing 50 years to the improvement of maintenance
The EFNMS, the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies, was established in 1970 and transformed in 2003 to a formal non-profit organization based in Brussels, Belgium. In the autumn of 1970, a symposium was arranged in Duisburg, by UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization). To participate in this symposium UNIDO had invited maintenance people from different countries in Western Europe. During this meeting participants where convinced that in a near future, maintenance would be looked upon as a topic of strategic importance for industry. To be prepared for this situation, they decided to establish an European organization, where experience could be exchanged and knowledge further developed for later transfer to developing countries. This organization was to be called EFNMS, European Federation of National Maintenance Societies.

Since then, the EFNMS strives to improve maintenance for the benefit of the peoples of Europe. By the term ‘maintenance’ is meant: the combination of all technical, administrative and Managerial, actions during the lifecycle of an item intended to retain or restore it to a state in which it can perform its required function. Maintenance is omnipresent and is vital to our current technological society. Based on the More4Core project in 2016, EFNMS roughly estimates that European industry spends about 400 billion Euro in order to maintain an industrial asset base worth 10.000 billion Euro.

Maintenance Photo Contest open to everyone
Unfortunately the impact and importance of maintenance is not very well known. That’s why EFNMS launches an international photo contest. 24 pictures will be published in a photo and form the basis for a traveling exhibition throughout Europe. As an active member, BEMAS shares the vision and values of the EFNMS. BEMAS has fully committed to engage maintenance professionals in Belgium to also participate in the contest.

Pictures can be sent in before July 11th 2020 and should relate to one of the various themes in maintenance of physical assets (industrial plants, machines & equipment, building & facilities, infrastructure & grids, transportation, …). The contest is open to everyone: industry professionals, maintenance workers, professional photographers, and hobby photographers in the general public.

The winning pictures are selected by the jury of EFNMS and by the general public. The jury gives 70 % of the points, the audience gives another 30 %. Audience voting is open from 1st July until 15th August. The picture with the highest score receives a prize of € 800, the second best € 400 and third place receives € 200. The winners are announced on September 1st 2020. The 24 bet pictures are published in the photo book and will constitute a maintenance photo exhibition.
