Istec International, leading supplier of measurement and control technology, has included the new IST-203 hot cutover tool in its range. With this tool it is possible to take over the control loop of the DCS during a DCS migration, so that this loop can easily be migrated without affecting the production or causing downtime. This makes hot cutover DCS migrations safer, faster and less complex.
Many DCS systems in the process industry are approaching the end of their life cycle and will shortly need to be migrated to a more modern system. The most efficient DCS migration, in terms of both time and money, is a migration during active process conditions, a so-called hot cutover. The biggest challenge with a hot cutover migration is maintaining the production process during the disconnect and replacement of the DCS.
By means of the electrical loop takeover process, developed by Istec International itself, the IST-203 takes over the control loop of the DCS during the migration. In this way, the DCS can be replaced, calibrated and verified without disrupting the production process. Subsequently, the DCS takes over the loop in a secure manner.
Safety and speed
DCS migration using the IST-203 takes progresses step by step, so that any errors can be traced and resolved quickly. Furthermore, it is no longer necessary to make mechanical constructions or bypasses during the hot cutover, which increases safety and migration speed. The IST-203 has an offset control function, so that the loop values can be adjusted during the migration.
The IST-203 is equipped with software that measures whether the tool is connected to the loop in the correct manner. After connecting the new DCS, the tool also verifies the output value of this DCS. Since the entire hot cutover process is guided through the software and the necessary fail-safe options have been built in, the chance of errors, and therefore risks, have been reduced to a minimum.
